Students from Lesley University worked with Friends of Alewife Reservation to set up an experiment seeing how a native seed mix grows in different combinations of soil and enrichment products, including biochar. Biochar is a carbon-rich soil additive that provides nutrients for plants as well as habitat for beneficial fungus that grow in association with plant roots ('mycorrhizae').

Thanks to Sierra Club and Green Cambridge for providing the Biochar!

Students from Leslie University prepare the experimental plots. First, they pull existing weeds.

Next, any rocks, dried plants and other materials are raked away to expose bare ground.

Students then load biochar into a wheelbarrow to bring it to the planting site.

Students begin scattering seeds once the biochar has been placed.

One of the biochar planting areas with nearly all the seeds scattered.
