Dear Governor Patrick, August 22

My name is Virgilio Dipre and I am a member of Youth Opportunities Boston. Currently I am participating in an Ecology camp sponsored by the Friends of the Alewife Reservation located on the Alewife Reservation.

I just wanted to tell you about one experience I had during the camp which was for 7 weeks. One thing we did was we went into the woods and we GPS mapped Japanese Knotweed. We had to cut a lot of it to get along the path. I really enjoyed doing this and found the Knotweed really interesting. The Silver Maple Forest was also interesting. I think we should help save the Silver Maple Forest because lots of animals and plants live there, people do exercise there, do nature walks there. I enjoyed seeing all the trees and plants.

Sincerely,

Virgilio Dipre

My name is Addison Marsh and I am a member of Youth Opportunities Boston. Currently I am participating in an ecology camp sponsored by the Friends of the Alewife Reservation located on the Alewife Reservation. One thing we did during this camp was we removed invasive plants. We worked hard and some examples of plants we cut down included thorn bushes and Phragmites. After cutting we bagged them up and the DCR took them. The Silver Maple Forest was another part of the Reservation. I am writing this letter because I think the Silver Maple Forest is in danger of being cut down. It would be nice if you could do something to prevent that from happening because there are a lot of animal's homes that will be destroyed. When that happens, it will because the animals to move into the city and that will make things real difficult. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Addison Marsh

My name is Kenny Baez and I am a member of Youth Opportunities Boston. Currently I am participating in an ecology camp sponsored by the Friends of the Alewife Reservation located on the Alewife Reservation.

I am trying to bring something very important to your attention. We are doing some work in the Silver Maple Forest, but here's the problem. The Forest is in great danger right now. The forest is a home to so many animals. It's kind of hard for me because I'm a city boy. But if the forest is to be cut down where are the animals going to live? How are they going to take good care of their offspring? how are they going to survive? I'm starting to know more about nature and wild life. Youth Opportunity Boston gave me a chance to learn about this nature stuff and so far it's been good. It's hard for me to explain, but I know there are a whole lot of people that feel like me. You might be one of them. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Kenny Baez

My name is Rick Brown and I am a member of Youth Opportunities Boston. Currently I am participating in an ecology camp sponsored by the Friends of the Alewife Reservation located on the Alewife Reservation.

I learned a lot in this camp, especially about Canadian Geese. They are about two and a half feet tall and are usually brown, green, and white. They travel along land in groups of up to 22 to 25 geese. They don't interact with people very much. I also learned that they tend to leave water after it rains because they have delicate feet and the ground is hot in the summer. The geese make their home in the pond next to the Silver Maple Forest. I think we should use all the money possible to save the Silver Maple Forest because it's a great forest. We walked through the forest and it looked amazing. Something that beautiful should be preserved. Thank You.

Sincerely,

Rick Brown

My name is Delisha Long and I am a member of Youth Opportunities Boston. Currently I am participating in an Ecology Camp sponsored by the Friends of the Alewife Reservation located on the Alewife Reservation. I think you should save the Silver Maple Forest because of the animals. I think the trees should not get cut down because of the nests that the birds use for homes. If it gets cut down where would all of the animals go? It's their home and has been for a while. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Delisha Long

One invasive plant I learned about was a flower called Purple Loosestrife. The flower is variably shaped and wrinkled. My flower tends to take up a lot of space and stops all the other plants and flowers from growing. It shows between the months of July and September. Thanks to this camp I learned about this flower. The Forest was also something I learned about. I think we should save the forest because we have alot of animals that live in the forest. If it's gone where are all the animals going to go? So save the Silver Maple Forest please! Thank you.

Sincerely,

Joanna Etienne

One thing we did during this camp was water quality testing. We tested temperature, flow, dissolved oxygen level, and PH. This was really interesting because we also watched videos about stream quality and we were testing for all the things they were talking about in the video. The results of the tests we showed that the water was up to standards. Now I would like to mention the Silver Maple Forest You need to help us save the Silver Maple Forest because we work and if we don't have this forest, we will not be able to work and do our experiments. We need to do these as part of this job and have done and enjoyed them. It would be very helpful that you help us save it.

Sincerely,

Rayshonda Williams

Dear Governor Patrick,

My name is Margaret Golston and I am a member of Youth Opportunities Boston. Currently I am participating in an Ecology Camp sponsored by the Friends of the Alewife Reservation located on the Alewife Reservation.

One bird I found and learned about on the reservation was the Catbird. They stand about 9 inches long and appear to be grey. The Catbirds calls are like meows and they also mimic a lot of other birds. The Catbirds face is very distinct and it's a very unique type of bird. That's one of the many things I've seen on the Alewife reservation. I am also writing in concerns of the Silver Maple Forest. I strongly disagree with cutting down the Silver Maple Forest and hope you do not turn the reservation into homes or developments. Please help us save the Alewife Silver Maple Forest.

Sincerely,

Margaret Golston
