Resolution in Support of Preserving and Protecting
the Belmont Silver Maple Forest
Unanimous vote on 5/31/07 by Democratic City Committee of Cambridge

WHEREAS the Cambridge Democratic City Committee has through the initiative of Ward 6 has adopted a resolution to preserve the Belmont silver maple forest, of which 3 acres are in Cambridge adjoining the City's largest fragile wetlands; and

WHEREAS the Zoning Board of Appeals of the town of Belmont has passed a Decision to allow he O'Neill Properties of Pennsylvania, the owners of the property on which the forest is located, to proceed with plans for building on the forest; and

WHEREAS a Civil Action has now been filed against O'Neill Properties by Little Pond Winn Brook neighbors and environmental organizations;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Ward 6 Democratic Committee supports the efforts of the plaintiffs in Civil Action to preserve the Belmont Uplands; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Ward 6 Democratic Committee urges the Cambridge Democratic City Committee to call upon State Representative William Brownsberger of Belmont, Cambridge and Arlington to promote a Bill to purchase the Belmont Uplands and to work with the Trust for Public Land to negotiate a settlement with O'Neill Properties; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Ward 6 Democratic Committee and the Cambridge Democratic City Committee support the Bill by Sen. Robert Havern which would require a full environmental impact study of the area before permits would be given along Route 2.
