Recent beaver activity at Little River
by Michael Arnott, April 17, 2004

(also see: Beaver come to Alewife) - January 2002

This morning, 4/17/04, on the south bank of the Little River about 50 yards east of the old beaver bank lodge I saw the stump of a freshly beaver-cut sapling. I looked up and down the south bank from the east end to the second old beaver "clear cut" but could not find any more signs of recent beaver activity. The old lodge did not look like any renovation is taking place.

A friend of mine saw a beaver on the bike path about 7-8 years ago. The lodge was occupied for awhile two years ago when the two beaver "clear cuts" on the south bank were done. It seems beavers, from somewhere, keep trying to inhabit the Alewife Reservation but the conditions are not quite right for long term occupation. It may be water quality, water level, food supply or some combination of the above that is the problem. It will be interesting to see what the effect of the master plan will be.
