JOIN THE FRIENDS OF ALEWIFE RESERVATION
IN A MONITORING EFFORT FOR THE
CAMBRIDGE STORMWATER WETLAND
AND LITTLE RIVER

What will we monitor?
Friends of Alewife Reservation would like to form a steering Team and Stream Team to provide added oversight to the construction and monitoring of the stormwater wetland that is being constructed in Alewife Reservation as part of the Cambridge combined sewer separation. The wetland is designed to contain and treat stormwater from the streets of Cambridge. The committee members will attend hearings on the project, will help to draft comments on aspects of the work, and will look at inspection reports during construction. The Stream Team will also monitor the Little River for anadromous fish habitat and for spawning alewives. Additional surveys of the Reservation and the Little River will be planned as well.

What is involved in being on this Stream Team?
Members of the Stream Team will attend hearings and will help to draft comments to the Conservation Commission on project plans. Other activities may include: trail planning and maintenance, monitoring Little River for salinity and for anadromous fish activity, assisting the city with educational components of stormwater management, and coordinating with project engineers.

Team members will have an active role in planning and implementing the activities of the group, including:
  • Deciding on goals for this monitoring effort.
  • Outreach about stormwater pollution and the new stormwater wetland.
  • Writing comments to town boards.
  • Monitoring Little River for anadromous fish
  • Coordinating with the Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Cambridge Conservation Commission.

A Steering Team meeting for interested volunteers will be held in early April. At this meeting, we will determine spring activities for the Stream Team. We hope you can join us!

To volunteer, contact Ellen Mass, elnmass@verizon.net 617 547-1944. You can choose to be part of the Team, or to volunteer for the Survey and followup actions.
