Little Pond - aerial image
Aerial image which puts the Little Pond headwaters of our subwatershed Little River/Alewife Brook into proper perspective perhaps for the first time. Beginning in Belmont, the 500 year floodplain is a giant drainage basin for Belmont, Cambridge, and Arlington. Virtually all of Belmont's stormwater empties into the Little River subwatershed shared with Belmont downstream by Cambridge, Arlington, Somerville and Medford. This view shows green space as no other GIS map has indicated, and has given proper perspective to the rare silver maple forest just south of Little Pond where it forms the core of the Alewife Reservation. As a beginning to the preservation effort at Alewife Reservation, over 16 mammals and 90 bird species have been professionally inventoried by a FAR Riverways grant.
