Envisioning Alewife Reservation
City and State leaders show interest in Alewife Wednesday, October 30, 2002 - Panel discussion Fitzgerald Elementary School Auditorium. 70 Rindge Avenue, Cambridge Sponsored by FAR Local officials, environmental leaders presented future open space needs for our cities and towns, for land preservation, environmental education, passive recreation, wildlife habitat protection, wetland restoration, waterways improvements for the Alewife area of the Mystic River watershed. (Summing up of the panel presentations will be done by the speakers themselves.) Moderator: Julia Bowdoin, former head of Cambridge Conservation Commission, Assistant to Cambridge City Manager. Speakers PETER ALDEN: is author of 14 nature books including National Audubon Society Field Guide to New England (Knopf) featuring 1,000 plant and animal species in color that everyone should know. He is perhaps the world's ecotourism leader having designed and led 300 tours, safaris and cruises to over 100 countries on 7 continents. He is the founder of the first Biodiversity Day with Edward O. Wilson and currently works for Secretary Bob Durand of the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs in operating the fourth year of statewide Biodiversity Days. MICHAEL SULLIVAN: Mayor of Cambridge, Supporter of open spaces and recreation (active and passive) in Cambridge, Strong open space backer. Creation of parks and recreation opportunities in Cambridge. Runner and sports activist. Outdoor education advocate. Strong proponent of clean and safe watersheds. Supporter of the Alewife Reservation's restoration and passive recreational role for the region. National speaker on changing unused rail corridors to community trails, enriching American communities. Headed southern New England's largest railroad-owned transloading facility.
