Oil Spill June Alert on Mystic River Watershed

For Immediate Release
Mystic River Oil Spill Update
6/5/2013

The Mystic River Watershed Association, in response to the release of more than 9,000 gallons of fuel oil to the Mystic River last Friday, is continuing to monitor water quality and environmental conditions along the main stem of the river which was impacted by the spill.

Fast action taken by the Town of Arlington Fire and Police Departments, the Arlington Department of Public Works and by emergency response teams from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection helped to mitigate the disastrous impact to the local environment from this very unfortunate incident.

Working around the clock, teams from more than 15 agencies, towns and cities, were able to contain much of the oil released within a series of booms established along the length of the river. Removal of the product from the water surface was undertaken by Clean Harbors, a well respected clean-up contractor based in Norwell.

The Cities of Chelsea, Everett, Medford, Somerville and Cambridge, State Haz Mat teams, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority all responded to the call for help and provided important assistance.

Although most of the oil has now been removed from the water surface, the important work of restoring the Mystic from the effects of this release remains ahead.

Further assessment will be required to determine the short and long term damage to natural resources in the Mystic River system as a result of this spill.
