WHEREAS: The Alewife Reservation is an important natural resource for the city and the citizens of Cambridge; and
WHEREAS: The Friends of Alewife Reservation (FAR) has been a constant and vigilant steward of the reservation; and
WHEREAS: The FAR Ecology Camp can make the conservation connection with youth becoming more 'green' in their thinking as ambassadors, with nature exposure and training by professionals; and
WHEREAS: State Representative William Brownsberger of Cambridge, Belmont and Arlington gave support to FAR helping to promote his House Bill 21 to purchase the silver maple forest for the Department of Conservation and Recreation with Environmental Bond bill acquisition monies; and
WHEREAS: DCR has expressed great support for the Boston-area Friends groups, and FAR in particular, and recognizes FAR as an integral part of their stewardship initiatives; and
WHEREAS: FAR has elected a new leadership including David Howe as Treasurer and William Ackerly as Secretary; and
WHEREAS: Ellen Mass, the longtime and dedicated leader of FAR is retiring in April; now therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record recognizing the Friends of Alewife Reservation for its tireless efforts to make the region aware of the significance of the varied and intertwined ecosystems in this 115 acre urban wild in Cambridge, and be it further
RESOLVED: That the City Council applauds the Friends of Alewife Reservation for its efforts to educate stewards for the Reservation in the future; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the City Council supports the organization's summer Ecology Camp and welcomes the Department of Conservation and Recreation's continued work on the Alewife Master Plan and DCR's commitment to addressing the needs of the Friends of Alewife Reservation; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the City Council recognize and go on record expressing thanks to Ellen Mass for her many years of tireless service to the protection of the Alewife Reservation; and be it further
RESOLVED: That the City Clerk be and hereby is requested to forward a suitably engrossed copy of this resolution to Ellen Mass on behalf of the entire City Council.
