Snowbirds and deer tracks at Alewife Reservation
February 23, 2007
by Seamus Palmer
(see images below)

I took a walk along the path on the far side of Little River at the Alewife Reservation on Friday morning. (23rd Feb '07)

First time I was ever on that side of the river.
Great walk in the undisturbed snow in the woods!
I felt as though I was in some remote wilderness rather than just yards from the T station and the traffic of Route 2.

I have included some bird pix.

Some other birds I spotted were black capped chicadees, a bright red Northern Cardinal contrasting beatifully against the snow, a mourning dove and some cloven hoof tracks which I presume to be those of a deer.

Just as I was leaving the area I heard a loud tapping and turned to see a Downy Woodpecker pecking at the tall hollow grass stalks.
